NAB CUP - FINAL
Nothing will ever compensate Geelong for the shock and disbelief of last year's grand final, but at least the
Cats made their first step towards putting their disappointments behind them when they thrashed
Collingwood by 76 points in the NAB Cup final at Docklands.
In the early moments, Collingwood made the front-running, a super-goal by Chris Bryan giving them the
lead and it wasn't till quarter time that the Cats would level the match. Some wasteful finishing by Tom
Hawkins, struck by nerves with two missed shots from barely 20m out, revived memories of the Cats'
wastage that would cost them so dearly in last year's grand final loss to Hawthorn. And Josh Hunt's
season may be over before it started, after he went down in a marking contest with what looked like a
serious knee injury.
But the Cats hit their straps in the second term. And it was their big names who sprung to life to send the
Cats' fans into raptures. Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett were accumulated possessions at will, while they
were well supported around the ground. As heads started to drop in the Magpie camp, the Cats took full
advantage as they raced to a 40-point lead at half time.
It would have taken something remarkable for Collingwood to come back from there, and it never looked
like happening. The Cats won the third and fourth quarters, giving the embattled Magpies no respite as
they raced away to a 76-point victory.
