North Melbourne returned to the Gold Coast for the first time since rejecting the relocation offer when they
took on West Coast; in front of the smallest crowd to watch an AFL game since Fitzroy's dying days. And to
make the setting worse, a light tower failed during the game, being part of the ground into darkness. The
struggling West Coast found a new lease of life early, and when debutant Ryan Davis scored a goal with
his first kick in AFL football the Eagles were out to an early lead. But the Kangaroos steadied and
eventually took out a 6-point win in a match that had little of the atmosphere or intensity that is normally
associated with football at the elite level.

The Brisbane Lions moved into the top 8 for the first time in 2008 after jumping Carlton early and running
away to a 33-point win. Brownlow medallist Simon Black was at his brilliant best, accumulating
possessions at will; while Jonathan Brown proved a handy target up forward with 6 goals. With 8 goals to
2 in the opening quarter, Carlton were already damaged goods by quarter time, and although they worked
hard to limit the extent of the loss, and despite 5 goals from Brendan Fevola, the Blues were never a
chance of getting back into the contest.
Brisbane                8.3        11.8        16.13        18.17 (125)

Melbourne had broken their losing streak at their last start, and scored the first goal in their match against
Adelaide at AAMI Stadium, but that was as far as their revival went. The Crows dominated the remainder of
the match, doubling the hapless Demons' score as they raced to a 76-point win. Brett Burton entertained
the crowd with a dynamic 5-goal haul; while Tippett was also handy on the forward line with 4 goals. The
result saw Adelaide tighten their grip on a top-4 position while ensuring the Demons would continue to
languish on the bottom of the ladder.
Adelaide                  8.1        12.6        15.15        22.18 (150)

After suffering a seemingly season-ending injury in a pre-season match, Nick Malceski underwent radical
surgery and amazingly returned to action as Sydney took on Essendon at ANZ Stadium on a rare Sunday
game at the Homebush venue. Malceski got through the match unscathed, but sadly for the Swans just as
he returned from a major knee injury Tadgh Kennelly went down and looks out for the remainder of the
year.
On the field, Michael O'Loughlin dominated the Marn Grook Trophy match was a dynamic 6-goal display,
but it was hard to find a Swans player who was beaten as the Sydney side raced away to a 91-point win
over a dismal Essendon. It was the first time in the Bombers' history that they have been beaten by 10
goals in 3 successive games, as the once-proud club drifted further away from contention.

With a 5-goal burst in the third quarter, Fremantle looked set to upset the unbeaten Bulldogs when the
Dockers held an 18-point lead at the last change and coming home with the wind and a fanatical home
crowd. But with former Brownlow medallist Jason Akermanis leading the charge, the Bulldogs came
storming home in the last, hitting the front as the clock ticked into time-on and holding on for a remarkable
3-point win after an even and entertaining contest that kept the crowd enthralled.

The congestion around the halfway point of the ladder thickened when Collingwood moved into the mix and
brought St Kilda down to level terms after a thrilling 9-point win to the Magpies at Telstra Dome on Friday night.
The Saints made the early front-running, but a goal after the half-time siren to Dale Thomas put the Magpies in
front and from there they were never headed. St Kilda created numerous opportunities during the last term to
steal the match, despite Collingwood having the bulk of possession, but were unable to capitalise.

With the first 3 goals of the game kicked in the first 10 minutes, was an upset on the cards and could it be
Richmond that would finally end the Cats' golden run? In the end the answer was no, but the Tigers proved more
competitive than most by holding the half-time lead and restricting the Cats' final winning margin to 30 points.
Paul Chapman scored 4 for the Cats, while Gary Ablett and Cam Mooney were prominent as the Geelong winning
streak continued.

Port Adelaide jumped Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium, scoring the first 7 goals of the game and leading by 32 points
at quarter time. But the Hawks steadied, and with the twin towers of Franklin and Roughead up forward leading
the way, slowly worked their way back into the contest. Lance Franklin's 6th goal at the 28 minute mark of the third
term gave the Hawks the lead for the first time, and holding the desperate Power to just a solitary goal in the last
quarter, completed a 15-point win.
