In an entertaining and sometimes controversial clash at the Docklands on Saturday night, St Kilda hung on
to beat Richmond by 3 points. Steven Milne was in outstanding form for the Saints, kicking 7 goals to prove
the difference between the two sides in a classic contest that went right down to the wire. Milne's 7th goal
at the 25 minute mark of the final quarter gave the Saints a 5-point lead, and from the restart the Tigers
moved the ball forward but agonisingly twice hit the post. After the final behind, a timekeeping error kept the
clock running for 14 seconds; which was to prove crucial as the Tigers forced the turnover on centre wing
and found Jack Riewoldt 55 metres out. But the siren sounding eliminated the options of going short,
options that may have presented had time still been on the clock. Riewoldt's shot was just too far out and
failed to make the distance, giving the Saints a 3-point win.

It took over 20 minutes for the first goal to come when Adelaide took on North Melbourne on Saturday night;
the Crows' inaccuracy keeping the Kangaroos in the contest. But in a match that never reached any great
heights, the Crows pulled away with 8 straight goals in the third term to set up a break the Northerners
were never a chance to recover. Jason Porplyzia kicked 4 for the Crows in a best-on-ground performance.
The Kangaroos recovered some pride in the last quarter to restore some respectability to the scoreboard,
but it was a disappointing performance for them in what has been an inconsistent season to date.

The Swans' roller-coaster of emotions continued when the Sydney side was humbled at the SCG, with the
Bulldogs continuing their unbeaten run in 2008 with an 18-point win. A 7 goals to 1 second quarter gave
the Bulldogs the advantage, with their straight kicking never giving the Swans a chance to work their way
back into the contest. Adam Cooney with 5 and Brad Johnson with 4 were the Bulldogs' best; while the
return to form of Adam Goodes with 26 possessions was a positive for the Swans on a disappointing day.
Western Bulldogs        3.1        10.2        14.2        18.4 (112)

With Fremantle leading by 50 points at half-time, it was looking like Melbourne's season of doom and
despair would continue along its familiar path. But suddenly everything changed as, amazingly, the
Demons worked their way back into the contest. In the second biggest ever half-time comeback, the
suddenly-inspired Demons came from 50 points down to hit the front late in the contest and take out a
remarkable 6-point win. Few of the small crowd on hand saw it coming, but all of them found voice as the
match developed atmosphere, excitement and a remarkable result that will lift the spirits around the
embattled Melbourne; but continuing the season of mediocrity for the under-performing Fremantle.
Melbourne                1.3           3.8          8.15        17.17 (119)

Port Adelaide brought round 7 to a close with a comprehensive 64-point demolition of Essendon, only the
Bombers' straight kicking from their limited opportunities sparing them from total humiliation. Daniel
Motlop scored 7 for the Power, while Salopek and the Burgoyne brothers notched up plenty of possession
as Port Adelaide, bouncing back from a 4-match losing streak at the start of the season, find themselves
only outside the top 8 on percentage. But for the Bombers, after showing some promise in the opening
round, the season is at serious risk of getting away from them after another insipid display.
Port Adelaide                6.4        14.10        19.13        24.14 (158)

Friday night football saw Chris Judd return to Perth when his new side, Carlton, travelled across the Nullabor to
take on West Coast. And Judd returned home a happy man as the Blues continued their recent revival with a
37-point win over the undermanned Eagles. Eight unanswered goals in the second term set up a match-winning
lead, compounding the home side's doom and gloom as they crashed to a club record worst ever losing streak
with their 6th straight loss.
Carlton                        2.4        10.7        12.8        17.9 (111)

Geelong's unbeaten run continued against Brisbane at Skilled Stadium on Saturday, but it was far from the easy
ride the pundits predicted pre-match. The Lions stunned the locals with an early break, leading by 11 points at the
first change; and from there the lead see-sawed. Early in the last quarter, a scent of an upset was in the air when
the Lions again hit the front; but with the last 4 goals of the game the Cats completed a 27-point win in a game
that for most of the day was much closer. Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartel was again in vote-winning form, and
was well backed by captain Joel Corey and fullback Matthew Scarlett who kept Jonathan Brown quiet.
Geelong                        4.1        7.6        11.8        15.15 (105)

Hawthorn remain unbeaten and on a roll after their comprehensive 65-point demolition of Collingwood in front of
a massive crowd of over 76,000 at the MCG. The Hawks won every quarter to extend their lead as the day went on,
but left the best till last when they ran through 10.1 to 3.5 in the last term. Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead
were unstoppable up forward, each contributing 6 goals to the Hawthorn cause; while Sam Mitchell continued his
golden run in the midfield. It was a disappointing fadeout by Collingwood, hampered by the last-minute
withdrawal of Anthony Rocca and barely hanging on to a spot in the top 8, but Tarkyn Lockyer tried hard up forward
with 4 goals.
Hawthorn                5.4        8.6        14.9        24.10 (154)
