West Coast returned to the winning list for the first time since round 1 when the Eagles caught Adelaide on
an off day and took out a convincing 50-point win. It was tight and low-scoring early, with Ben McKinley
scoring the only goal of the opening quarter, but the floodgates opened in the second term and the Eagles
had little difficulty from then on in dispatching with the minimal resistance put up by Adelaide. Young Eagle
Ryan Davis got himself in the record books in a way he wouldn't have wanted, being the first player to be
penalised for a breach of the AFL's new interchange system.

Australia's Aboriginal heritage was celebrated with a "Dreamtime at the MCG" display before the
Essendon v Richmond game on Saturday night; but once the match commenced Essendon's dream time
because nightmare time. The Tigers raced out of the blocks with the first 8 goals of the game as the
hapless Bombers were unable to compete in any aspect of the game. The Bombers sprung to life in the
third term, winning the quarter to give at least some veneer of hope for the future, but by then the damage
was done and the Tigers restored the Bombers' gloom with a 4 goals to 2 final term.

Brisbane maintained their position in the top 8, and continued St Kilda's indifferent season, when the
Lions took out a 46-point win at the Gabba on Sunday. The margin flattered the Saints, with Brisbane
having led by over 10 goals at the last change before the Saints doubled their score in the last quarter to at
least restore some semblance of respectability to their score. The Brisbane forward line was on first, with
Daniel Bradshaw and Jonathan Brown each contributing 6 goals to the Lion cause; while Brownlow
medallist Simon Black was again among the Lions best. St Kilda's coach Ross Lyon was scathing in his
post-match press conference, labelling his players as soft and promising a major clean-out of the playing
ranks in the weeks to come.
Brisbane                        3.6        9.10        17.11        21.15 (141)

In the opening round, Hawthorn had humiliated Melbourne by over 100 points; and although the Hawks
won the return fixture at the MCG on Sunday it was a lot closer this time. The Demons had dug deep
during the week and found some resolve and hard-tackling, and this time were not prepared to accept
defeat without putting up a fight. The Demons held a shock 9-point lead at half time, and even briefly helf
the lead during the last term; but the Hawks did what they needed to when it mattered to record a victory
and move to the outright ladder lead.
Hawthorn                        3.3        4.7        10.9        14.13 (97)

North Melbourne gave Brent Harvey a 250th game to remember with a nail-biting 3-point win over the
Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome in the Sunday twilight game. Harvey was flattened early after a knee to
the head, but returned in the last quarter and with a stunning triple-bouncing run kicked an amazing goal;
one of many lead changes in an even and high-scoring tussle. Even after the final siren sounded the
march wasn't over, as veteran Bulldog Brad Johnson had the ball 40 metres out and a chance to continue
the Bulldogs' unbeaten run. But his shot just went wide, giving the Kangaroos a remarkable win.

When Geelong swept all before them in a record-breaking grand final run last season, it was easy to forget how
close the Cats got to not even playing in the grand final. In last year's prelim final the Cats only just fell over the
line by 5 points; and on Friday night Collingwood got a slice of revenge when they handed out the reigning
premier's first loss of 2008. And the Magpies didn't just win, they thrashed the previously unbeaten Gelong by 86
points. The Cats were without Brad Ottens and Paul Chapman, but even with those highly-credentialled
absentees it was a shock to see the Cats forced into turnovers by a ferocious Collingwood defence that put on a
display that throws their hopes for 2008 wide open.

Fremantle's disappointing season continued when the Dockers let slip a chance of a valuable away win when
they went down to Carlton by 9 points at Telstra Dome. The Dockers, aided by their straight kicking, held a 5-point
lead at the last change but were held to a single goal in the last quarter;equalling an all-time AFL record by losing
after leading at the last change in 3 consecutive games. Nick Stevens was best on ground for Carlton, while the
Dockers were well-served by a 4-goal haul from forward Matthew Pavlich.
Carlton                                4.3        7.7        11.10        14.13 (97)

Port Adelaide v Sydney at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon began as a high-scoring shootout but finished as
a defensive slog as the pressure and intensity on display from both sides stepped up as the match progressed.
The Swans had the better of the opening exchanges, with 8 goals in the first term; but with a bag of 6 from Brett
Ebert keeping the Power in the contest the Swans were never able to get to too big a lead. With the Swans tiring
in the latter stages of the match, Port caused the Sydney side some anxious moments by levelling the scores in
the last quarter, but a late effort on the run from Brett Kirk and a mark on the forward line by Tim Schmidt got the
Swans home.
Sydney                                8.1        11.4        13.9        16.9 (105)
