NAB CUP - ROUND 2
Much of the interest in the Collingwood v Richmond match was of the return of former Brownlow Medallist
Ben Cousins to AFL football; and a bumper midweek crowd of over 37,000 was on hand. Wearing the
Tiger colours for the first time, Cousins had a reasonable first-up hit out, although still well short of full
match fitness. Cousins copped a knock from Harry O'Brien which resulted in him needing to be
interchanged a few times to seek treatment throughout the night, and a diagnosis of concussion
prevented Cousins from attending a planned post-match media conference.
But for Cousins' Richmond team, it was a disappointing night as the Tigers were outclassed by 46 points
by a red-hot Collingwood side. The Magpies spread the goalkicking around, with their 14 goals shared by
13 players as the Tigers were unable to stop their multi-pronged forward line. The Tigers were also
unable to find a multiple goalkicker, but had fewer opportunities to create enough scorers to challenge the
Magpies.

It was another thriller for Essendon, but again the Bombers hung on for dear life against a fast-finishing
Brisbane to set up a semi-final date with Collingwood.
The first three quarters saw some see-sawing momentum changes, but when the Bombers drew 18
points clear in the last term it was looking like they were set to progress through. But the Lions weren't
done yet, with the margin then being reduced to just 3 points with a minute to go. A Brisbane free was paid
on the wing, but an incorrect return from Alwyn Davey saw a 50m penalty awarded to Brisbane rookie Jack
Redden. The 50m put Redden within the attacking 50m line, giving him a chance to win the game, but the
ball sailed just wide and the Bombers were able to hold the ball until the final siren.

On a warm and sunny day in Adelaide, the attendance of only 8,341 for the Port Adelaide v Geelong
match was disappointing; but the fans who did attend saw three quarters of close competitive
football before the Cats pulled away in the last quarter to book themselves a semi-final berth.
There was only a point in it at half time, and the Cats still only had a small lead by the last change.
But Matthew Stokes took control of the game in the last term, kicking Geelong's 4 goals; and despite
a sensational 9-point goal from Daniel Motlop and a spectacular marking attempt by Kane Cornes
on the Port forward line, the game was safe for the Cats.

Carlton were at close to full strength while Hawthorn were without 11 of last year's premiership side,
but early on it was the Hawks who made the front running in the Sunday evening Docklands clash.
With Jarryd Roughead enjoying room to move up forward on his way to a 6 goal haul, the Hawks
were looking in good touch. But Carlton gradually worked their way back into the contest, coming
from 31 points down to hit the front during the third term and carrying on their momentum in the last
quarter to book themselves a semi-final clash with the Cats.
Carlton                            0.1.4       1.4.8          2.10.11        2.13.16 (112)
