Essendon's mid-season revival continued when the Bombers won their fourth game on the trot with a 37-
point win over Brisbane in an open, entertaining and high-scoring clash at Telstra Dome. The Bombers
got off to a flying start, kicking 8 goals to 4 in the first term, but a rally late in the third term saw Brisbane
close the margin back to 19 points at the last change. But the Bombers were not to be denied, kicking 7
goals to 4 in the last to wrap up their victory. Scott Lucas kicked 5 for the Bombers and Jonathan Brown 5
for the Lions in a head-to-head battle of the key forwards.

Port Adelaide's finals hopes took a fatal beating when the Power were pipped at the post by North
Melbourne in a thriller at AAMI Stadium. In cold conditions, a disappointing crowd of less than 20,000 saw
an even contest in the first half before the Power kicked 4 goals to 1 in the third term to run to a 10-point at
the last change. But the Kangaroos weren't finished yet, and a sensational snap by Lindsay Thomas put
the Shinboners in front as the clock ticked into time-on. But it wasn't over yet, and in the dying seconds
Warren Tredrea had a set shot on a tight angle. But agonisingly for the Power the shot drifted just wide,
and North were able to hold on for a victory that maintains their finals hopes.

Hawthorn were the hottest of favourites when they hosted Sydney at the MCG, even more so when the
Hawks were 33 points ahead at the long break. But the Swans showed determination in the third term,
holding the Hawks to 1 goal while kicking 4 themselves to cut the margin to just 10 points at three-quarter
time. But the Hawks powered away again in the last to run to a 31-point victory, with forward Buddy
Franklin finally shaking off the kicking woes that had beset him earlier in the day to kick 3 goals for the
quarter and finish with 4.7 for the match. The result keeps the Hawks in touch with the top 2; but for the
Swans their margin for 4th position has been cut to just half a game.

It wasn't the 95-point demolition that the Bulldogs handed out in round 2, but the Bulldogs' 31-point win
over Melbourne was enough to keep them in second place. The Bulldogs dominated possession for most
of the match and should have won by more, but were able to exert just enough scoreboard pressure to
keep the struggling Demons out of the contest. Matthew Cross and Darren Boyd in the midfield
accumulated plenty of possession, while Akermanis and Minson made a dangerous double act up
forward with 3 goals each.
Western Bulldogs          3.2        7.4        12.7        14.11 (95)
Melbourne                       1.0        4.2          5.6           9.10 (64)

West Coast's disastrous season took another turn for the worse when the Eagles were thrashed by 77
points at home against Richmond. After leading by 11 points at the first change, the Eagles unravelled
completely in the second half; while the Tigers capitalised by slamming home 11 goals to 1, and already
by half time the game was won. In the absence of Matthew Richardson, youngster Jack Riewoldt stepped
up with 5 goals in a best-on-ground performance. The result keeps Richmond within striking distance of
the finals, while only a narrowing percentage gap keeps the Eagles from the bottom of the ladder.
Richmond                       1.3        12.4        18.6        24.8 (152)

Carlton's inaccuracy, when the Blues kicked 2.8 in the first term, would come back to haunt them in the second
half as St Kilda picked up their intensity and gained momentum. Had the Blues built up a buffer in the first term
they may have put the Saints under pressure, but instead the Saints got themselves into a winning position; and
were content to sit on that advantage in the second half to cruise to a 32-point victory. Steven Milne underlined his
effectiveness as a small forward with 5 goals, while Nick Riewoldt and the experienced duo of Lenny Hayes and
Robert Harvey were also prominent for the Saints.
St Kilda                    2.4        9.7        14.9        18.11 (119)

Adelaide started promisingly in their clash against Collingwood at the MCG, but being held goal-less during the
third quarter saw the Crows surrender the lead. The Crows kicked the first four goals of the match, but the
Magpies slowly pegged them back through the first half to cut the deficit back to just 3 points at the long break. And
when Medhurst scored in the first minute of the third term, the Magpies had the lead; and would go on with the job
to record a 32-point victory. To make things worse for the Crows, key forwards Jason Porplyzia and Brett Burton
departed with potentially serious injuries. The result keeps Collingwood in touch with the top 4, but Adelaide's
fourth loss on the trot threatens their position in the top 8.
Collingwood              2.5        7.8        10.11        15.16 (106)

Fremantle had given Geelong a scare when the two sides had met earlier in the season at Subiaco, and in the
return game at Skilled Stadium the Dockers flew the flag early. A series of physical clashes unsettled the Cats in
the early stages, with Dean Solomon being reported for a hit on Cameron Ling that saw the red-headed Cat
forced from the field with a fractured cheekbone. But when it came time to settle down and play football, the Cats
had all the answers, pulling away as the game went on to win by 74 points. Joel Selwood was best on ground for
the Cats, whileTom Longeran and Corey Enright were also prominent.
Geelong                      4.2        7.7        13.10        18.10 (118)
