ANZAC Day at the MCG is always a special occasion, and so it was again for the traditional Collingwood v
Essendon clash. Early on it was open, even and free-flowing football; with both sides kicking 5 goals in the first
term. The Bombers took the lead early in the second quarter, but were then shut down by Collingwood and were
unable to manage another major until time-on in the third quarter. By then the Magpies had built an impreginable
lead and cruised home in the last term for an easy 73-point victory. Paul Medhurst kicked 6 and Travis Cloke 5 for
the Magpies; while Essendon's Courtney Johns was reported for rough play.

Leading by 39 points with 7 minutes to go before half-time, Fremantle had high hopes of upsetting Geelong, but a
devastating 6-goal burst before the break cut the margin to just 2 points. But the Dockers kept coming, holding the
Cats goal-less in the third term to lead by 25 points at the last change; but the fast-finishing Cats kept coming
back, hitting the front for the first time late in the last quarter. The Dockers weren't finished yet, moving the ball
forward to find Matthew Pavlich 50 metres out with 36 seconds left on the clock. But agonisingly, Pavlich's shot hit
the post; to break Fremantle hearts as Geelong hung on for a 1-point victory.
Geelong                     1.1        8.4        8.7        13.11 (89)

A 6 goals to 2 third quarter burst by Adelaide was enough to get them the points against a spirited Carlton at the
MCG on Saturday. Buoyed by a 2-match winning streak, the Blues made the early front-funning, with Nick Stevens
and Chris Judd prominent. But the premiership quarter, as it so often does, saw the momentum change as the
Crows' midfield got on top to starve the Blues of possession and scoring opportunities. The final margin was 30
points, with Brett Burton scoring 4 goals while Tyson Edwards and Andrew McLeod were again prominent for the
Crows.
Adelaide                3.3        6.7        12.11        16.15 (111)

Western Bulldogs maintained their unbeaten start to the season when the Victorian side were far too good
for West Coast at Telstra Dome on Saturday night. Already 21 points clear at half time, an 8 goals to 1 third
term put the result of the match beyond doubt, keeping the struggling and sadly depleted West Coast side
in its lowly 15th place. Jason Akermanis and Robert Murphy each scored 4 for the high-flying Bulldogs;
while a bad night for the Eagles got even worse with the report of Brent Staker for striking and a knee injury
to Adam Hunter.
Western Bulldogs           7.3        11.6        19.10        20.14 (134)
West Coast                      4.1          8.3           9.4             11.8 (74)

In wet and slippery conditions at AAMI Stadium, St Kilda racked up more than 100 possessions in the
first quarter, but many of them were ineffective and the Saints were only able to manage 2 points for
the quarter. It took the Power some time to get their game going, but 3 goals in time-on set up a lead
that would never be threatened for the night. In a lacklustre game before the lowest crowd ever for an
AFL game in Adelaide, Port were able to show some form when it mattered to record their first home
win for the season and give their long-suffering supporters something to smile about. But for St Kilda,
fancied as premiership hopes before the season started, it was back to the drawing board to find
some attacking options in a season that threatens to run away from them.
Port Adelaide                3.2        6.5        10.7        12.10 (82)
St Kilda                           0.2        3.4         7.5            9.7 (61)

side by D Pearce.

The early Sunday game was played in 30 degree heat at the Gabba, and Brisbane returned to the
winners list and continued Melbourne's annus horribilus when the Lions recorded a 52-point win. In a
game that never reached any great heights, the form of Daniel Bradshaw with 6 goals was a rare
highlight. Brisbane's 42 scoring shots to Melbourne's 20 was symptomatic of the difference between
the two sides, with the Lions being possible finals contenders while already it appears that only a
miracle would keep Melbourne away from the wooden spoon.
Brisbane                3.6        10.13        15.17        19.23 (137)
Melbourne             2.1          5.2             8.3            13.7 (85)

A Wonaeamirri, B Green, C Sylvia.

Another week, another Sunday draw at Telstra Dome. This time it was 1996 grand final combattants
North Melbourne and Sydney in action. For much of the second half it was looking like the Kangaroos
would prevail, getting out to a 15-point lead in a low-scoring contest half way through the last quarter.
But two goals to Michael O'Loughlin got the Swans back into the contest, and with just one minute to
go and North leading by a point, a shot by Brett Kirk looked good for a goal, but was just touched by
Kangaroo defender Michael Firrito to register a point. And so it finished a draw, a disappointing result
for both teams but a fair result for a game where both sides had attacking opportunities they failed to
take advantage of.
Kangaroos                1.2        3.7        7.9        9.10 (64)
Sydney                       3.5        4.7       6.10       8.16 (64)
Goals : Kangaroos - D Hale 2, C Jones 2, N Thompson 2, M Campbell, L Harding, H McIntosh.
Sydney - M O'Loughlin 3, A Goodes 2, C Bird, N Davis, D Jolly.
Best : Kangaroos - M Firrito, D Petrie, E Lower, M Campbell, A Simpson. Sydney - A Goodes, B Kirk, T
Kennelly, P Bevan, K Jack.
Injuries : Kangaroos - A Edwards (broken leg), J Smith (soreness) replaced in selected side by E
Sansbury.

Hawthorn were easily the better side in the Sunday twilight game, getting the better of possession and
registering 36 scoring shots to 19; but the Hawks' inaccuracy threatened to give Richmond a win they
barely deserved. Eventually the Hawks prevailed by 12 points to maintain their unbeaten start to the
season, but it was a frustrating evening for the Hawks; particularly for forward Lance Franklin who
scored 1.7 for the day. In the end, Jarryd Roughead stepped up on the forward line, contributing 5
goals to get the Hawks over the line, while a bag of 4 goals from Richmond's Matthew Richardson
was pivotal to keeping the Tigers in the contest.
Hawthorn                4.7        6.12        10.18        14.22 (106)
Richmond               4.1         6.1           11.4           15.4 (94)
Goals : Hawthorn - J Roughead 5, M Williams 2, C Rioli 2, M Osborne 2, L Franklin, C Young, B
