Barry Hall returned to the Swans after his lengthy suspension, and kicked 2 goals in the Swans' 35-point
win over St Kilda at the SCG. After the Swans led by 26 points at half-time, the Saints had a third quarter
fightback, cutting the margin back to just 11 points. But as quickly as the challenge was made, it was
responded to as the home side ran through the last 4 goals of the quarter to put the contest out of St
Kilda's reach. Captain Brett Kirk was again among the Swans' best, while Ryan O'Keefe and Michael
O'Loughlin kicked 3 each.

Hawthorn hadn't beaten Adelaide at AAMI Stadium since 1994, but finally that hoodoo was put to bed when
the Hawks prevailed by 4 points in a thriller. It was at times a tight defensive struggle, with the lead
fluctuating throughout the night; but at the 22 minute mark of the final quarter it was Luke Hodge who
scored the winning goal to give the visitors the points.
But the main talking point of the night was the report of Hawthorn fullrward Buddy Franklin, after a
head-high hit on Crow defender Michael Doughty. It was the culmination of a dirty day for the Hawk forward,
who found his marking strength and kicking accuracy that has served him so well this season had
deserted him for the night.

The grand final replay at Skilled Stadium saw Geelong again assert themselves, and although the margin
was a lot less than 119 points this time the result of the game was never in question.
Port began the game with a strategy of physical confrontation, with a scuffle breaking out before a ball had
even been bounced and the Power players crashing into their Geelong opponents at every opportunity
early. But it was the Cats who knuckled down to business, refusing to get sucked in by Port's physical style
and going for the ball. It was a move that backfired badly for Port Adelaide, slipping further out of contact of
this year's top 8, and for whom the grand final appearance as recently as last year becomes an ever-fading
memory.
Geelong                             3.5        7.9        13.14        15.18 (108)

For the first time in many years Carlton are in the top 8, after the Blues completed a 30-point victory over
Collingwood in front of a bumper crowd of over 80,000 at the MCG. Scores were level at the last change,
but the Blues turned up the intensity in the last quarter, and with 8 goals to 3 went on to record a
memorable victory. Brendan Fevola at full-forward was in awesome touch with 8 goals, and although
Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse was constantly reshuffling his backline, none of Fevola's many
opponents were ever able to make any impact on the game.
Carlton                         2.7        3.10        9.13        17.17 (119)

A devastating 8 goals to 1 burst in the second quarter was enough to give Richmond a 22-point win over
the struggling Melbourne in the twilight game at Telstra Dome. With a 38 point lead at half-time, it could
have been a blowout, but to Melbourne's credit they kept fighting back, and when Austin Wonaeamirri
scored midway through the last term the margin was back to 8 points. But the Tigers steadied, and
although their chance for a percentage-booster was missed, the all-important 4 points keeps the Tigers
well clear of the back of the pack and keeps their narrow finals hopes alive.
Richmond                   3.6        11.13        13.15        16.20 (116)

Essendon's long losing streak is finally over after the Bombers took out a 22-point win over fellow strugglers West
Coast at Telstra Dome on Friday night. It was a struggle, and they didn't always look convincing; but winning every
quarter they gradually eked out a match-winning lead. The highlight of the match was a spectacular mark by
Matthew Lloyd early in the last quarter, climbing up to the shoulders of Eagle defender Darren Glass to grab the
ball. When he kicked truly, the Bombers were out to a lead of 21 points and the game was safe.
Ruckman David Hille was outstanding, dominating the centre as well as kicking 3 goals. Forwards Scott Lucas
and Jay Neagle also contributed 3 for the Bombers. The Eagles missed Daniel Kerr, a late withdrawal with a leg
injury; but were well served by David Wirrpanda who kicked 4 and was their best.
Essendon                         4.6        7.11        11.14        16.17 (113)

Brisbane led the Western Bulldogs by 2 points at quarter time, but once the Bulldogs hit the front there was no
looking back; and by the second half it had become one-way traffic as the Bulldogs raced away to record a
63-point victory.
Former Adelaide forward Scott Welsh was a focal point up forward for the Bulldogs with 5 goals, while Brad
Johnson and Jason Akermanis both scored 3. One of Akermanis' was a contender for goal of the season, from 50
metres out on a tight angle, barely keeping the ball in play before steering it through the goals to break the heart of
his former club. The result keeps the Bulldogs up there with the league leaders, but puts Brisbane in the danger
zone, just hanging on to their spot in the top 8.
Western Bulldogs                 2.6        7.12        12.15        19.17 (131)

A win at last for Fremantle. After tormenting themselves and teasing their supporters for so long with so many
near misses, everything finally clicked into place for the Dockers as they played a solid 4 quarters to record a
commanding 53-point win. The Docker defence shut down the North Melbourne forward line so brilliantly that the
Kangaroos were only able to manage 3 goals by three-quarter time; and although North were to triple their goal
tally in the last term, the damage was done. At the other end of the field, Matthew Pavlich was in scintillating form
with 8 goals in a best-on-ground performance. And to add to bragging rights for the Dockers, the win puts them
ahead of local rivals West Coast.
Fremantle                         5.3        9.8        13.11        18.12 (120)
