NAB CUP - ROUND 3
Collingwood, right through the NAB Cup, have shown themselves to have already hit their straps and
looking to make a statement for 2009 by breezing through the tournament. And so it was again on Friday
night, when a red-hot Collingwood was far too good for Essendon. Young forward John Anthony, who has
struggled with injuries and shortage of opportunities in recent years, made the most of his chance with a
convinging 7-goal haul. The Magpies raced out of the block to lead by 25 points at quarter time, and went
on with it in the second. Essendon had plenty of ball early in the third quarter, but failed to capitalise on
their opportunities; and Collingwood always looked to have enough in the tank to ensure the game was
safe.

Geelong set up a final date with Collingwood when the Cats overcame a plucky Carlton side in front of a
disappointing crowd of 15,305 at Docklands. It was tight and low-scoring, but the Cats were buoyed by a
super-goal by youngster Jeremy Laidler in the second quarter to take the ascendancy; and another
9-pointer by Paul Chapman during the last quarter gave the Cats enough of a buffer to ensure there was
no way back into the contest for the Blues. For Geelong, Paul Chapman dominated around the ground,
while Cameron Ling and James Kelly picked up plenty of midfield possession to compensate for the
absence of Jimmy Bartel and Joel Selwood, who were rested for this game. Carlton, without key
playmakers Chris Judd and Brendan Fevola, struggled to find sufficient scoring opportunities to challenge
the Cats,  and it was Geelong who went on to record a 17-point victory.
