St Kilda qualified first for the pre-season cup grand final after a hard-fought 3-point win over Essenton at Telstra
Dome on Friday night. The Saints had got off to the better start against an inaccurate Bomber lineup, but a
super-goal to David Hille early in the second term got the Bombers back into the contest.
The fortunes of both sides fluctuated wildly throughout the night, with both sides on occasions threatening to get
on top only for the other side to work their way back into the contest. Scores were level at the last change; and with
just seconds left on the clock Essendon were holding a 3-point advantage. But, in the face of the St Kilda goal,
Bomber defender Angus Monfries was penalised for holding the ball; giving St Kilda's David Armytage the easiest
of shots to give the Saints the lead at the final siren.
The Saints will play Adelaide in the final, after the Crows overcame a determined Hawthorn side to progress with
a 23-point win at AAMI Stadium. Scores were level at the long break, but the Hawks' inability to score a goal during
the third term was to cost them any realistic prospect of taking out the match. Electrifying Adelaide forward Brett
Burton, with 3 goals, signalled to the football world his determination to make an impression in 2008 and was
well supported around the ground by a Crows' lineup that has easily accounted for all comers to qualify for home
ground advantage for next week's final.
In other trial matches, Geelong were 40 points too good for Brisbane, while Richmond hit some pre-season form
with a 25-point win over Sydney in Narrandera. The Western Bulldogs recorded a 40-point win over Melbourne in
Bendigo, in a match that was concluded early after a power failure saw the lights go out in the final term. West
Coast were 41 points too good for Carlton, while the Kangaroos accounted for Fremantle by 37 points and Port
Adelaide continued Collingwood's nightmare pre-season with a 35-point victory.
