New Essendon coach Matthew Knights continued his dream start to his stint leading the Bombers
with a convincing 54-point win over the Western Bulldogs. Scott Lucas made his first appearance for
2008, and was a dominant force with 3 super-goals as the Bombers crushed the Bulldogs to advance
to the semi-finals. Pre-season form is an unreliable predictor of the season to come, but all the signs
were positive for the Bombers, who dominated around the ground.
Reigning champions Geelong travelled to Canberra to take on St Kilda, and looked set for another
easy demolition job when the Cats landed 2 supergoals in the first 10 minutes. But from the flying start
the Cats were unable to continue that momentum in the warm conditions, and St Kilda rallied. Led by
Justin Koschitzke with 4 goals, the Saints bounced back with 3 supergoals of their own to hit the lead
in the third term and hand on for a meritorious 5-point win.
It was a supergoal feast on Saturday night at Telstra Dome, with Hawthorn and Carlton each landing 4
nine-pointers to keep the scoreboard ticking over. But there was more to the Hawks' performance than
long kicking, with last year's shock finallists better able to win the contested possessions to record a
34-point victory.
The final second-round game saw Adelaide too good for Fremantle to progress to the semi finals by
17 points. Dual Norm Smith medallist Andrew McLeod was in strong form, while Ken McGregor with a
supergoal and 3 normal goals was an effective target up forward. Fremantle hung in there, never
letting the margin blow out, but at no stage did they look a chance to take the game.

The teams eliminated in the opening round played a series of trial games. The Kangaroos took on
Brisbane at Princes Park and recorded a 32-point win, while Richmond gave their long-suffering
supporters some cause for optimism for the season ahead with a 35-point win over an undermanned
Melbourne lineup. In Albany, West Coast overcame early inaccuracy to defeat Collingwood by 33
points; while Sydney hosted Port Adelaide at ANZ Stadium and last year's runners-up were to be
humiliated again as the Swans were untroubled in racing to a 69-point win.
