AFL
Round 2 commenced with a cliffhanger at the Gabba on Friday night, with Brisbane getting up by just
2 points over Collingwood. Fortunes fluctuated through the first half, before the Magpies got on top in
the third, racing to a 16-point lead at the last change. On a heavy ground the lead looked to be enough
to hold out the tiring Lions, but instead it was Collingwood who felt the pinch in the last term at the
locals, cheered on by a vocal crowd of over 33,000 stormed home, hitting the front late in the match.

After a 105-point belting in the opening round, Melbourne got off to a flying start when Aaron Davey got
on the board in the opening minute. But it was to be the only bright spot all day for the Demons, as the
Western Bulldogs got on top after an even first quarter. By the third term the rot had set in, with a nine
goals to two quarter sealing the Demons' fate and condemning them to another hefty defeat. The final
margin of 95 points has compounded the doom and gloom around the Demons, who have a tough
trip to Kardinia Park in round 3 to take on the reigning premiers.

Adelaide were given a good chance, with the home ground advantage, of beating a West Coast side
still rebuilding its midfield; but few expected the one-sided demolition that would unfold at AAMI
Stadium on Saturday. Simon Goodwin was the star with 7 goals, but the Crows were dominant
around the stadium, and by the final quarter the contest had turned into a rout, the Crows slamming
home 8 goals to 1. A knee injury to key defended Darren Glass compounded the misery for the
Eagles, while propelling the Crows into the top 8 for the first time this season.
Adelaide                6.4        10.5        13.6        21.7 (133)

Carlton got off to a quick start against St Kilda, kicking the first 4 goals of the game to raise hopes that
the Blues' long losing streak would finally come to an end. But gradually the Saints lifted, with the twin
forward targets of Fraser Gehrig and Steven Milne each contributing 4 goals as the Saints hit the front
late in the second term and held Carlton goal-less in the premiership quarter. The final margin of 40
points was a solid performance by a St Kilda side that was on top around the ground. For Carlton, the
loss was their 14th in a row, just 1 short of the club's all-time record losing streak of 15 in 1901-02.
St Kilda                2.5        8.7        12.9        19.11 (125)

After an even first term, Hawthorn got a break over Fremantle with a 5 goals to 1 second term to open
up a 27-point lead at half time. Buddy Franklin and Jarryd Roughead proved handy targets up forward,
each scoring 4; while Sam Mitchell and young gun Cyril Rioli were carving up the midfield. Despite
late rallies by Fremantle at the end of the third and final quarters, the Hawks were never seriously
threathened, consolidating their hold on top spot on the ladder.
Hawthorn                3.4        8.7        11.11        16.16 (112)

Sydney had been savaged for their defensive mindset after scoring just 6 goals in their first-round
match against St Kilda, but their scoring fortunes had turned around when their 6-goal tally had
already been matched during the first quarter of their match against Port Adelaide. From there the
Swans were always on top, a 7 goals to 1 third quarter putting the issue beyond doubt. Barry Hall
scored 5 and Michael O'Loughlin 4 for the Swans as they cruised to a 68-point demolition of Port
Adelaide. For the Swans, their first home game was a welcome way to break their duck for 2008, but
the Power find themselves 0 from 2 and with some work to do to get their season back on track.

Geelong switched on their premiership-winning brand of football and blew the Bombers away in a
dazzling exhibition of football at Telstra Dome on Sunday afternoon. All the stars were at their brilliant
best, with Brownlow medallist Jimmy Bartel in scintillating form while Gary Ablett and rising star Joel
Selwood were also dominant. It was a crash from chocolates to boiled lollies for Essendon, after their
good win in round 1 to be flogged by 99 points. 14 Geelong players got themselves onto the
goalkickers list, while the hapless Bombers were only able to manage 6 between them for the game.

In a frantic opening to the Sunday twilight game at the MCG, the Kangaroos jumped Richmond to run
to a 27-point lead at the first change; and were able to maintain that lead for the remainder of the
game, eventually recording a 39-point victory. After being knocked out without recording a stat in the
opening round, Corey Jones returned to the Kangaroos lineup and was a dominant force with 7 goals
to lead the way for the Shinboners. Well supported by Shannon Grant with 4, the Kangaroos had all
the answers, this result going a long way to restoring their hopes for 2008 that had taken such a
beating in the opening round; but it was a rude awakening for the Tigers after their opening round
upset victory.
Kangaroos                7.4        11.4        18.5        20.7 (127)
