For much of Saturday night's match at AAMI Stadium it appeared that Port Adelaide were set to win
their first match for 2008. The Power led at every change, and by late in the third quarter the lead was
47 points with a wet ground and a parochial Power crowd. But somehow the Lions managed to jump
off the canvas and work their way into the contest, stunning the locals with a 9 goals to 1 final quarter
to take an unexpected win. Daniel Bradshaw with 5 second-half goals was the catalyst, in what was a
remarkable turnaround that raises hopes that this season will produce something special for
Brisbane but leaves last year's grand finallists still without a win.
Brisbane                       2.2        4.6        9.10        18.16 (124)

The Buddy Franklin show travelled to Tasmania as Hawthorn took on Adelaide at Aurora Stadium and
took out a comfortable 44-point victory.  Lance Franklin was best on ground with 6 goals, and was well
supported by an enthusiastic Hawks lineup who continued their unbeaten run in 2008. For the Crows,
it was a disappointing chapter in what has been an inconsistent season to date; but the South
Australian side had no answers to the seemingly relentless Hawks juggernaut that at this stage of the
season looks to be the only side capable of challenging the all-powerful Geelong.
Hawthorn                 3.4        8.5        14.8        17.12 (114)

The Carlton losing streak is finally over, and it happened when the Blues took out a 23-point win over
arch-rivals Collingwood at the MCG. The Blues raced out of the blocks, and although both sides had
12 scoring shots to half-time, that stat gave an impression the game was closer than it was. Instead,
it was Carlton who showed the greater pace, the greater determination, and in Brendan Fevola they
had a target to concentrate their attacking efforts towards. It's been a long time between drinks for the
Blues, but finally the long-suffering Carlton side have had something to celebrate.
Carlton                            6.0        10.2        12.6        17.9 (111)

With the home ground advantage, and having had a win to get their 2008 campaign on track the week
before, Fremantle were expected to have little trouble disposing of the struggling Richmond. But
someone forgot to give the Tigers a copy of the script, with the Victorian side winning every quarter to
cruise to a 64-point demolition. Matthew Richardson kicked 4 in a welcome return to form for the
Tigers, while Matthew Pavlich kicked 3 in what was a disappointing performance from the inconsistent
Dockers.
Richmond               5.7        10.11        14.13         20.17 (137)

The Bulldogs continued their unbeaten run on Friday night, but were made to fight it out against a
determined and injury-depleted Essendon side that never gave in. Without Lloyd and Lucas, and
losing McVeigh to a hamstring injury early in the contest, the Bombers were blown away by the
Bulldogs as the undefeated side ran to a 26-point quarter time break. The Bombers fought hard, and
hit the front to lead by 2 points; but with no interchange players to draw from, they had no answer
against the fresh legs of the fitter Bulldogs, who displayed their pace in the last term to take out a
30-point win.
Western Bulldogs            5.4        10.6        13.8        19.14 (128)

When will Geelong's winning streak end? St Kilda in the first quarter gave some hope that this would
be the game to break the run, dominating possession and creating 11 scoring chances to 4. Had the
Saints been more accurate, they may have established enough of a lead to put the Cats under
pressure, but instead the margin was just 7 points at the first change; and within 5 minutes of the
restart the Cats had taken the lead and never looked back. Brownlow Medallist Jimmy Bartel was at
his brilliant best, and was well supported by Matthew Scarlett and Joel Corey in another brilliant Cats'
display.
Geelong                     4.0        10.6        7.9        21.10 (136)

The original fixture had the Kangaroos drawn to play Melbourne on the Gold Coast, but following the
decision by the Kangaroos to remain based in Melbourne the game was transferred to the MCG; but
the Kangaroos would have been disappointed that only 23,000 fans turned out for the game - a bigger
crowd than they would have received on the Gold Coast but without the corporate backing and AFL
payouts.
But on the field, there were few grounds for disappointment from the Kangaroos' camp, as they
comfortably accounted for the Demons by 48 points. Nathan Thompson was back to his best with a
bag of 5, while Brent Harvey was best on ground and Aaron Edwards created a nomination for mark of
the year. It was another gloomy day of few highlights for the embattled Melbourne, and although Aaron
Davey tried hard, too few of his team-mates appeared to show the same intensity.

Sydney were untroubled in recording a comfortable 62-point win over West Coast at ANZ Stadium, but
the talking point of the game will forever be the sickening blow landed by Swans forward Barry Hall on
West Coast defender Brent Staker. Hall found himself reported, and subsequently rubbed out for 7
weeks; and although it was his first suspension since 2002 it brought back memories of the bad-boy
image from his St Kilda days that he had worked so hard to rid himself of. Hall is suspended for 7
weeks, but ironically is likely to not have been able to play for that long anyway after injuring his wrist in
a collision with the boundary fence during the final quarter.
Away from that incident, the Swans were far too good for the depleted Eagles. In a contrast to the
low-scoring close encounters of recent seasons, the Swans dominated from start to finish and
recorded an easy 62-point win. Michael O'Loughlin with 4 goals was the Swans' top scorer, while 4 of
the Eagles 5 goals came from the boot of Ben McKinley, who played a lone hand up forward.
