West Coast's fall from grace continued, as did Collingwood's purple patch, when the Magpies
thrashed the hapless Eagles by 100 points at the MCG. Already 32 points ahead at the long break, the
Magpies ran away with 15 goals to 3 in the second half, scoring at will against the outclassed West
Coast defence. An injury to Daniel Kerr further exacerbated the Eagle nightmare. Paul Medhurst
scored 5 up forward and 13 Magpies got their name on the goal-scorers list, while Dane Swan and
Leon Davis were among their best. For the badly beaten Eagles, Quentin Lynch scored 3.

Carlton matched it with Geelong in the first half of their match at Telstra Dome, and the Cats led by
just 13 points at the long break. But the premiership quarter was a different story, and it was one-way
traffic as the Cats ran through 6 unanswered goals to put the game out of Carlton's reach. Steve
Johnson was magnificent, booting 5 goals in a best on ground performance. The Cats were also well
served by 4 goals from Matthew Stokes, and from their dominant midfielders Ablett and Corey. For
Carlton, Chris Judd was again among their best and Brendon Fevola scored 3; but this was a
disappointing loss for the Blues that sees them at risk of losing contact with the top 8 after better form
in recent weeks.

Saturday night at the Gabba, and it was the twin towers of Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw that
stole the show and kept North Melbourne out of the contest. A 7-goal burst in the second quarter
opened up a 40 point lead at the long break, and although the Kangaroos tried their hardest to peg
back the deficit in the second half they were only able to make up 9 points. Bradshaw and Brown each
finished with 6, while midfielders Simon Black and Luke Power also picked up plenty of possessions
to set up the spearheads and keep the scoreboard ticking over. For the Kangaroos, experienced
hands Adam Simpson and Brent Harvey were among their best.

Sydney raced out of the blocks against a lamentable Richmond at the SCG, racing through 13 goals
before the Tigers managed their first shortly before half-time. While Richmond looked pedestrian, the
Swans were sensational, with big guns Goodes, Kirk and O'Keefe among their best and 12 Swans
got their names into the goalscorers list. Richmond were out of the contest already by the long break,
but in the second half the Swans took their foot off the pedal and Richmond salvaged a small degree
of pride by winning the second half. But the final margin of 82 points was a fair reflection of the
one-sided contest, a result that keeps the Swans in 5th place just half a game outside the
double-chance zone.

St Kilda kept themselves within striking distance of the top 8 and kept Melbourne anchored to bottom
spot when the Saints demolished the Demons by 79 points. It wasn't a game that reached any great
heights, with Melbourne managing just 3 goals in the first 3 quarters and by then the Saints had put
the game well and truly out of Melbourne's reach. Adam Schneider, playing his best game for the
Saints since crossing to the club during the off-season, was a focal point up forward with 5 goals;
while Fisher, Gram and Reiwoldt were among the Saints' best. On another day the Demons would
love to forget, Adem Yze with 3 goals was their only effective forward.

Port Adelaide kept their finais hopes burning strong while keeping the Dockers stuck in equal last
spot when the Power travelled to Subiaco and returned home with a 28-point victory. In a game
dominated by a strong wind, Fremantle kicked with it in the first term but their 18-point lead at the first
change was easily swept away by Port within minutes of the start of the second term. The Dockers
again struggled in the third term, and although they hit the front the lead was only 2 points at the last
break; a lead that within a minute of the start of the final term had disappeared. Daniel Motlop scored
5 for the Power in a best on ground performance.

After insipid performances in recent weeks, few gave Essendon a hope of being even remotely
competitive when they travelled to Adelaide to take on the high-flying Crows. But, displaying a resolve
that was so noticably absent in recent weeks, the Bombers took the fight right up to Adelaide, and with
a bit of luck may have even stolen the game. They were helped by some wasteful finishing in front of
goals by Adelaide, particularly in the third quarter when the Crows scored 3.9. But in the end, the
Crows took out the match by 5 points to maintain their spot in the top 4

Hawthorn suffered their first defeat for 2008 when the Western Bulldogs won every quarter to
overpower the Hawks by 32 points in Tasmania. A capacity crowd of over 19,000, the vast majority
supporting Hawthorn, looked on as the Bulldogs were first to the ball all day, proving themselves
more than worthy of competing with Geelong and Hawthorn in what is already looking like a 3-way
fight for this year's title. Scott Welsh scored 4 for the Bulldogs while Jason Akermanis was best on
ground. For Hawthorn, a 5-goal bag by Buddy Franklin kept them in the contest but they were never
able to launch enough momentum to make any form of inroads into the Bulldogs' lead.
