The premiership quarter was the difference between the two sides at AAMI Stadium, with Adelaide
coming from a point down at half time to be 24 points ahead at the last change. But the Crows had to
withstand a strong challenge from a fast-finishing Carlton to hang on for an 8-point victory and remain
within reach of the top 4.
Carlton made the early front-running, and were 3 goals up early in the second term; but their
momentum was stopped when youngster Steven Browne took out Crows forward Jason Porplyzia
behind play. After Porplyzia was stretchered off, the Crows lifted and fought their way back into the
contest. But after their strong third quarter, the Crows had no more energy left in the tank; and the Blues
came storming back in the last. It was so close and yet so far for the Blues, whose finals chances are
slipping away.

A 63-point win by Geelong over Richmond maintained the Cats' lead at the top of the table, while the
Tigers again are at risk of falling short of the top 8 again.
The first quarter was even, but the Cats took control of the game in the second and third quarters, 13
goals to 4 putting the game out of Richmond's reach. Jimmy Bartel and Joel Selwood each racked up
more than 30 touches, while Tom Longeran and Ryan Gamble each contributed 3 goals.

North Melbourne's last home game on the Gold Coast saw the Kangaroos move into the top 4, while
Brisbane's finals hopes took a hit after North took out an 8-point win.
The Lions took the ascendancy in the second term, kicking 5 goals to 1 to lead by 14 points at the long
break. But by the end of the third quarter there was only a kick in it. A tense and low-scoring final quarter
saw the ball travel end to end, but scores were hard to come by until late in time on, when Lachie
Hansen and Scott McMahon got the Kangaroos over the line. Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw
each kicked 5 goals for the Lions, but other scoring options were not forthcoming, and when the
Kangaroos defence locked the tall Lions out of the game in the last term none of their team-mates were
able to step up and make a contribution on the scoresheet.

A potential upset was in the air early at Manuka, when the Swans got off to a flying start against the
Bulldogs. It took just 7 minutes for the Swans to go 24 points clear, some loose Bulldogs defence
letting Jarrad McVeigh assert himself early.
But once the Bulldogs got their game going, the Swans struggled to find answers. 8 goals to 1 in the
second quarter put the Bulldogs 28 points clear at the long break, and although the Swans won the
second half they never looked a realistic chance to get into the game. Scott Welsh kicked 5 and Brad
Johnson 4 for the Bulldogs, while Jarrad McVeigh finished with 6 for the Swans.

St Kilda were given a fright by Port Adelaide, but the Saints did just enough to fall over the line by 8
points and move back into the top 8. After an even first half, the Power gained the ascendancy in the
third term, kicking 4 goals to 2 to lead by 13 points at the last change; and chould have led by more
were it not for some wasteful turnovers when goals were there for the taking during the third term.
But the Saints rallied in the final quarter, taking the lead as the clock ticked into time on. Even with
Jason Gram, with his 34th touch of the day, kicked his second goal to put the Saints 8 points clear, the
Power wouldn't give up, and the remainder of the match was spent with the ball camped in the Power
forward line and St Kilda defending grimly until the siren sounded.

There's always plenty of feeling in the WA derbies, and this one was no exception with some heavy
physical clashes early. But when the game settled down, it was Fremantle who made the front-running,
with a 9 goal first quarter to lead by 31 points at the first change and extending the lead to 41 points at
half time. The Eagles won the second half to salvage some respectability, but this was to be
Fremantle's derby day.
Luke McPharlin kicked 5 for the Dockers and Matthew Pavlich 4 in a best on ground performance.
Shaun McManus, the last original Docker and playing in his last derby, was also prominent with plenty
of possession as the Dockers would go on to record a 33-point victory and move 2 games clear of the
Eagles on the ladder.

Hawthorn snapped their losing streak while condemning the Magpies to their third straight defeat when
the Hawks jumped the Magpies early on their way to a 54-point win.
Buddy Franklin was the star of the show, with a bag of 8 goals, 3 of them in the first quarter as the Hawks
jumped to a 31-point quarter time lead. Inaccuracy plagued both sides in the second term, but the
Magpies came out firing in the third term; 3 quick goals reducing the margin to just 10 points. But the
Hawks stepped up a gear, with Mitchell and Hodge gaining key possessions while Franklin and
Roughead proved to be handy targets up forward. A 4-goal burst by the Hawks late in the quarter saw
that, against all expectations, the Hawks had won the quarter and the game was safe.
Hawthorn 6.3 8.8 12.11 17.14 (116)
Collingwood 1.2 3.8 6.13 8.14 (62)

Essendon skipper Matthew Lloyd moved to number 8 on the all-time goalscorers list, his bag of 8 goals
spearheading the Bombers to a 16-point win over Melbourne in a free-flowing and high-scoring contest
at the MCG.
With David Hille dominating the ruck, and Matthew Lloyd in top form up forward, the Bombers always
looked likely winners, but the Demons were far from disgraced as they continued to chip away, never
letting the margin blow out; and winning the last quarter to give the Bombers a few nervous moments
before Essendon finally prevailed. The result keeps Essendon's slim finals hopes alive, and should they
defeat West Coast at Subiaco next Sunday they will be back in the finals hunt despite their losing streak
earlier in the season. For Melbourne, this season is a likely wooden spoon, but if the Demons display
the fighting spirit they showed in this match, they remain a chance to work themselves off the bottom.
Essendon 3.1 9.6 14.8 19.10 (124)
Melbourne 2.2 7.3 11.5 17.6 (108)
Goals : Essendon - Lloyd 8, Monfries 3, McPhee 2, Lovett 2, Atkinson, Reimers, Slattery, Jetta. Melbourne
- Morton 3, Sylvia 3, Maric 2, Bate 2, Bartram, Green, Buckley, Davey, P. Johnson, Jamar, Wonaeamirri.
