After yesterday's rain delays, play started earlier to make up the backlog of fixtures. And for
the Aussies in singles action, it was to be a long day but success would eventually come. It
took Lleyton Hewitt the full five sets to shake off Denis Istomin, while Sam Stosur dropped
her first set against Rossana De Los Rios but then clicked into gear and would only lose one
more game in the final two sets.
Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova was the shock casualty of the day. The Russian
6th seed was strangely out of sorts, and was eliminated by 30th seeded Maria Kirilenko.
Also bowing out in the womens' draw was 11th seed Na Li. On the mens' draw, Chilean
12th seed Fernando Gonzalaz was a shock loss, going down in straight sets to Ukraine's
Alex Dogopolov Jr.
