| Every grand slam has a fairytale match where an underdog prevails against the odds, and the 2008 Australian Open had one to remember when Australian Casey Dellacqua, barely in the world top 100, prevailed over 15th seed Patty Schnyder. It wasn't looking that way early, with Schnyder taking the first set and getting a break in the second. But Dellacqua broke back and a second break gave her the set 7-5. The third set was a classic, but a key break to Dellacqua in the 13th game gave her the opportunity to serve out the match; which, despite the game twice going to deuce, she managed to achieve. But there was to be no joy for the other Australians, with Alicia Molik and Jessica Moore unable to win a set against their seeded opponents. 11th seed Tommy Robredo had a miracle fightback on Monday when he came from 2 sets down to win his 1st round game in 5 sets, but there was to be no comeback this time. Instead, the Spaniard was blown off the court by Mardy Fish, the American journeyman playing the match of his life to record a straight-sets victory. 13th seed Tatiana Golovin was another second round casualty, going down in 3 sets to countrywoman Aravane Rezai. 19th seed Sybille Bammer was never in the contest against Su-Wei Hsieh, going down 6-2 6-0. But for most of the seeds, straight-sets wins were the order of the day. Rafael Nadal, Nikolay Davydenko, Justine Henin, Jelena Jankovic and Venus Williams were among the comfortable winners on day 3. The evening session saw two former world number 1s, Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport, playing off. Davenport, playing in her first tournament since giving birth to her daughter last year, looked rusty and out of sorts in the first set; with Sharapova being untroubled in taking the first set 6-1. It was closer in the second set, going to 3-3, but a break to Sharapova in the 7th game of the set was enough to ensure a comfortable straight-sets win. Andy Roddick and Richard Gasquet also had quick evenings, taking little time to dispose of their opponents in straight sets to progress easily to the third round. |
