During the day the tournament followed similar lines to yesterday, with the top seeds comfortably going
through. But as evening came, suddenly the seeds began to have a hard time.
Womens top seed Dinara Safina took on little-known Australian teenager Olivia Rogowska. Against all
expectations, Rogowska stayed with Safina through the first set and then took out the tie-break to go to a
shock lead. And with an early service break in the second, Rogowska had an opportunity to cause the
upset of the tournament. But Safina steadied, breaking back before a run of back-to-back games took the
wind out of Rogowska's sails.
Not so lucky was 11th seed Ana Ivanovic. Everything looked to be going to plan when Ivanovic took the
first set 6-5, but from there she was comprehensively outplayed by Kateryna Bondarenko; and although
Ivanovic got a late break in the third set to force it to a tie-break, Bondarenko held her nerve to take out the
match. 16th seed Virginie Razzano was also a casualty, going down in straight sets to Yanna Wickmayer.
19th seed Stanislas Wawrinka was also shown the door, despite winning the first two sets against
Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti. Lapentti fought back to take the third and fourth sets in tie-breakers before
having little trouble with the last set. But the other major seeds were able to do enough to ensure their
progression to the next round.
