Kim Clijsters' return to the tennis big stage has been a major success already, and on Sunday she
claimed her biggest scalp to date in a match of swings and roundabouts when she defeated third seed
Venus Williams. Clijsters got off to a flying start, taking the first set without dropping a game; but then
was unable to win a game during the second set as Williams brought the match back to level terms. But
when the match was in the balance it was Clijsters who put her hand up and came up with the winners
when they were most needed to take out the match.
Seventh seed Vera Zvonareva was also a casualty, going down to Flavia Pennetta. But no such worries
for Serena Williams, who cruised through to the quarter finals. China's Na Li also progressed.
The mens' singles tournament completed the third round, with 14 of the top 16 seeds going through to
the round of 16. Joining Andy Roddick on the sidelines was 9th seed Gilles Simon, after suffering an
injury and being unable to complete his match against Juan Carlos Ferrero. Gael Monfils also had an
easy ride through, as Jose Acasuso could not go the distance in their match. Juan Martin Del Potro
dropped a set, but it was plain sailing for Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
