On the mens' side of the program, all of the top 16 seeds have made it through to the third round. But
although the elite men all progressed through to weekend action, several of them found it tough going
against determined opponents and had to survive a few scares before progressing.
16th seed Marin Cilic was in all sorts of trouble against local wildcard Jesse Levine, and soon found
himself 2 sets down. But that was as far as Levine could go, as Cilic stepped up with a devastating burst,
conceding just 3 more games before recording a 5-set win. 24th seed Juan Carlos Ferrero was also
taken the maximum distance by Germany's Philipp Petzschner but prevailed in 5 sets.
Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal both conceded the second set of their matches, but recovered to take the
match in 4 sets. Also going through in 4 sets was Fernando Gonzalez.
In womens' action, 8th seed Victoria Azarenka bowed out of the tournament, defeated in 3 sets by Italy's
Francesca Schiavone. But other than that result, most of the top women had a comfortable day - the
Williams sisters, Vera Zvonareva and Flavia Pennetta all recording easy straight-sets wins.
