Sunday sees the tournament move into the Round of 16, and bright sunshine made for the
roof on Rod Laver and Hisense Arenas being open and sensational conditions for tennis.
First up on Rod Laver Arena, Andy Murray suffered an early scare when beanpole American
John Isner got an early break. But Murray broke back later in the set to force a tie-break,
and from there on it was one-way traffic as the Scot went on to record a straight sets win.
But for Andy Roddick, it was far from plain sailing in his match against Fernando Gonzalez.
Roddick won the first set easily enough, but an hour later found himself a set down after
the Chilean 11th seed took the second and third sets. The fourth set was an arm wrestle,
as both players had to fight hard to save break points with several games in the set going
to multiple deuces. But Roddick finally broke Gonzalez's serve in the 11th game to take the
initiative; and then served out the next game to love to take the set and force the match to
a deciding set. An early break saw the momentum switch Roddick's way, and the 7th seed
was on his way to victory.
There were plenty of upsets. 4th seed Juan Martin Del Potro's campaign is over, after the
Argentinian went down in an epic see-sawing 5-set contest to Croatia's Marin Cilic. Also
going out was womens' 3rd seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, who struggled all day to produce
her best tennis and despite taking the second set never looked to be in the contest
against Nadia Petrova.
For second seed Dinara Safina, a leg injury saw her tournament come to a premature end
and handed a quarter-final spot to Maria Kirilenko without raising a sweat.
