Melbourne Victory retained top spot on the ladder, maintaining their psychological dominance over Adelaide United, but it wasn't a pretty or convincing performance. Victory found themselves a man down after less than half an hour when Ney Fabiano was sent off after remonstrating with referee Matthew Breeze and copping a red card for his trouble. But the Reds, try as they might, could find no way to capitalise on their numerical advantage. In the second half, Adelaide pressed but were unable to convert their opportunities. Down the other end, shortly after the hour, Archie Thompson was brought down in the box and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Muscat's penalty kick was saved, his first unsuccessful penalty shot in the A-League; but Reds' keeper Eugene Galekovic was unable to hold onto the ball and Muscat pounced on the rebound to score the winner. Melbourne Victory 1 ( K Muscat 63) Adelaide United 0 Yellow Cards : Victory - K Muscat 43, E Berger 66. Reds - A Costanzo 42, Diego 80. Red Cards : Victory - N Fabiano 28. Referee - M Breeze. In a game where few chances were created and none were converted, the Jets were at least able to take a point from the game; something they were unable to do in any of their clashes against Sydney FC last season; despite taking the title. Late in the game, with scores still deadlocked, frustrations boiled over with a series of tired and angry tackles. Card-happy referee Peter O'Leary handed out 5 yellow cards in the last 10 minutes of the game; sadly for Sydney veteran Mitchell Prentice, two of those cards were for him, resulting in Sydney playing the final few minutes of the game a man short. Newcastle Jets 0 Sydney FC 0 Yellow Cards : Jets - M Thompson 9, T Elrich 84, J Wheelhouse 85. Sydney - M Bridge 45, M Prentice 83,88, B Santalab 90. Red Cards : Sydney - M Prentice 88. Referee - P O'Leary. Crowd - 11,535 at Energy Australia Stadium. |
Perth Glory's A-League horrors continued when they were comprehensively outplayed 3-0 at home by Queensland Roar. It took just 14 minutes for a worm-burner from Craig Moore to shoot past plenty of Glory feet into their net. When McKay and Miller had also made their way onto the scoreboard before half-time, it was looking like a rout. Perth played better in the second half to limit the damage, but never looked like making up any of the deficit. To make a bad day worse for the Glory, Amaral was stretchered off with 15 minutes to go; and with Perth having already used all their substitutions, were forced to finish the match a man short. But Queensland, having already wrapped the match up, were happy to sit back and take the 3 points without any real attempts to add to the scoreboard. Perth Glory 0 Queensland Roar 3 (C Moore 14, M McKay 23, C Miller 45). Yellow Cards : Glory - E Dadi 27, Amaral 55, J Robinson 60, S McLaren 80, D Tarka 89, N Topor-Stanley 90. Roar - A Packer 26. Referee - B Williams. Crowd - 8,203 at Members Equity Stadium. A much-improved performance by Wellington Phoenix saw the New Zealand side climb off the ladder by holding Central Coast to a scoreless draw at Westpac Stadium. From early in the contest it was clear that Wellington had come to play, a far cry from last week's capitulation in Adelaide. The defence was tighter, the tackling tougher, and the attacking options more coherent. Had things gone their way, the Phoenix may have even stolen the match after a strong second half. Hearfield and Coveny both had golden chances shortly after the hour, but both found their shots go agonisingly wide. There were few chances created by the Mariners, in a match that the Central Coast side would have been hoping to take all the points from. But in the end, it took some determined saves from keeper Mark Bosnich to salvage a point from a disappointing display. Wellington Phoenix 0. Central Coast Mariners 0. Yellow Cards : Phoenix - R Johnson 5, K Dodd 18, T Hearfield 45. Mariners - J Hutchinson 50, P Bojic 54. Referee - S Delovski. Crowd - 6,928 at Westpac Stadium. |
