A-League Scoreboard - Round 8
Adelaide United gained some kind of revenge for last year's
grand final humiliation when they won a hard-fought contest
against Melbourne Victory 4-1 at Hindmarsh Stadium. The Reds
were first on the scorebook after an own-goal from Milicevic;
and moments after the restart Travis Dodd wrong-footed the
Victory defence to go 2-0 up after just 15 minutes.
Archie Thompson got one back just before half-time, but a
header to bring up Dodd's second restored the 2-goal
advantage for the Reds. A strike from Pantelis in injury time put
the icing on the cake; and ensured the Reds would open up a
3-goal advantage on goal difference over the reigning
champions.
Adelaide United 4 (L Milecevic 14 og, T Dodd 15, 64, L
Pantelis 90)
Melbourne Victory 1 (A Thompson 45).
Yellow Cards : Adelaide - S Ontong 82. Victory - M Kemp 3,
C Hernandez 29, S Pantelidis 56, L Milicevic 84).
Referee - M Shield. Crowd - 13,372 at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Perth Glory went into their match against Sydney FC on the
ropes, but came out fighting and were unlucky not to secure
their first win of the season. Against the run of play, Alex
Brosque scored shortly before half-time to put Sydney FC 1-0
up at the break; but the Glory played their best football of the
season to date in the second half. A header from Djulbic found
Jamie Harnwell in range to post an equaliser; and minutes later
James Robinson put the Glory in front. When Mitchell Prentice's
free kick went over the wall and into the Sydney FC goal in the
70th minute, the Glory were leading 3-1 and looked home.
But sadly for the locals, it wasn't to be. Patrick got one back
for Sydney FC minutes later to set up an exciting finish.
Deep into injury time, a corner found Patrick, who headed the
ball down to the feet of Alex Brosque within scoring range to
bang home the equaliser; a result that broke the Glory hearts
and enabled Sydney to salvage a point they barely deserved.
Perth Glory 3 (J Harnwell 53, J Robinson 59, M Prentice 69)
Sydney FC 3 (A Brosque 39 90, Patrick 72).
Yellow Cards : Glory - S Colosimo 42, N Sekulovski 48, M
Prentice 73.
Sydney - D Zdrillic 52.
Referee - M Breeze. Crowd - 6,876 at Members Equity
Stadium.

Newcastle returned to second place on the ladder when the
Jets took out a 2-1 win over Wellington Phoenix. After 17
minutes, Noel Spencer found Joel Griffiths, who with a pinpoint
pass set up first-gamer James Holland for the perfect debut.
Returning Socceroo Ahmed Elrich was making his first
appearance for the Phoenix, but it was his younger brother
Tarek who stole the show when he set up Joel Griffiths shortly
before the break to give the Jets a 2-0 lead.
For the second week in a row the Phoenix got a late goal back
to reduce the deficit. This time it was with the last kick of the
game, in a desperate scramble that just crossed the line. It was
the third injury-time goal in as many games this round - goals
that in one case turned a result, and for the other games could
be all-important should goal difference be required to
determine finals positions.
Newcastle Jets 2 (J Holland 17, J Griffiths 40) Wellington
Phoenix 1
(S Old 90).
Yellow Cards : Jets - S Laybutt 53. Phoenix - V Lia 38, R
Johnson 56, A Elrich 80).
Referee - B Williams. Crowd - 11,947 at Energy Australia
Stadium.

Ladder leaders Central Coast were stunned after 5 minutes
when a corner from Matt McKay found Josh McCloughan who
put the Roar in front. The Mariners found themselves in further
grief when Bradley Porter found himself red-carded after a clash
with McKay. Replays showed it may have been a tough
decision; but it left the Mariners with only 10 men. The top
side were forced to defend, which they did strongly to contain
the damage; but the 1-0 result reduces their lead on top of
the ladder to just 1 point; and leaves the Roar only outside the
top 4 on goal difference.
Central Coast Mariners 0 Queensland Roar 1 (J
McCloughan 5).
Yellow Cards : Mariners - D Heffernan 36, G Owens 55, S
Petrovski 64.
Roar - D Tiatto 22, M Zullo 42, J McCloughan 45,
Marcinho 65.
Red Cards : Mariners - B Porter 31.
Referee - P O'Leary. Crowd - 8,113 at Bluetongue Stadium.
