A-League Scoreboard - Round 3
Central Coast's early-season dominance continued on
Thursday night when the Mariners recorded a 1-0
away victory over Queensland Roar. The goal came
early in the second half, after a corner found its way to
Adam Kwasnik, who booted home the winner. The
Roar pressed hard for an equaliser, but stand-in
Mariners goalkeeper Matthew Trott was magnificent in
denying the home side. The Mariners, with 3 wins,
remain with a commanding lead over the rest of the
pack.

Kwasnik 55).

The grand final replay between Adelaide and
Melbourne at Hindmarsh Stadium was sadly
overshadowed by the behaviour of the travelling
Victory fans, who detonated flares and a firework
before being evicted en masse. It's a worrying sign for
the A-League, and for the Victory fans who have been
in trouble for such antics before. On the field, the
Victory hit the lead in the 80th minute when Rodrigo
Vargas scored with a header, but just minutes later
the hero became the villain when Vargas was pulled up
for a handball inside the box; and Travis Dodd slotted
home the penalty to secure a 1-1 draw.

Newcastle Jets became the first side other than the Mariners to win a game when they
defeated Wellington Phoenix 1-0 on Sunday. The Phoenix had the bulk of possession in the
first half but were unable to penetrate the Novacastrian defence, which would come back to
haunt them in the 77th minute when a free from Matthew Thompson deflected off the wall
and past the outstretched arms of Phoenix keeper Glenn Moss into the net. The win propelled
the Jets into second place on the ladder, while the Phoenix with just one point remain on the
bottom.

Another game, another scoreless draw for Perth Glory. This time the deadlock remained
unbroken against Sydney FC; the Glory having not scored or conceded a goal after three
games this season. In a lacklustre game in which few chances were created for either team,
much interest was on the number of players from both sides unavailable due to Socceroos or
Olyroos commitments as well as rising injury tolls. The lack of attacking power is already being
felt at the box office, with the weekend's total crowds for the A-League season averaging
under 10,000.
