Womens' semi-final day saw the Williams sisters both qualify for another Wimbledon final, but they
had to go through wildly different routes to make it through to the final.
Younger sister Serena was first up, taking on Elena Dementieva. And it was the Russian who made
the better start with an early service break, and although Serena broke back she was unable to get a
second break and the opening set went to a tie-break, which Dementieva took out.
Serena fought back in the second set, and although Dementieva proved a hard nut to crack, eventually
Serena's power game prevailed to take the second set and force the match into a decider. The final
set was an epic, well over an hour of pulsating tennis in which momentum swings made the final
outcome unpredictable. But eventually Serena prevailed 8-6 to make her way through to the final.
Then it was Venus' turn, as she took on top seed Dinara Safina. But Safina's number 1 ranking meant
nothing as Venus dominated the match from start to finish, taking the match and dropping only a
single game to do it. Safina's reign as world number 1 is over, the new number 1 Serena will be taking
on defending champion Venus in Saturday's final.
