THE CHAMPIONSHIPS, WIMBLEDON Day 7 review - Monday 2nd July 2007.
|
Wimbledon resumed after the Sunday rest day, but it was another day where rain played
havoc with the scheduling; some third round matches having still not been completed.
Justine Henin opened proceedings on centre court and completed a comfortable straight-
sets win over Patty Schnyder. Serena Williams was taken to three sets before overcoming
Daniela Hantuchova, while Venus Williams was given a fright by unseeded Akiko Morigami,
the Japanese journeywoman serving for the match in the third set before Venus broke
back to take a three-set victory.
Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova and Ana Ivanovic both enjoyed straight-sets wins, but
unseeded Austrian Tamira Paszek’s giant-killing run continued when she upset 12th seed
Elena Dementieva.
Wayne Arthurs’ singles campaign is over, the veteran Australian bowing out in straight
sets to Jonas Bjorkman. Marcos Baghdatis and Tomas Berdych also enjoyed straight-sets
wins; but few mens’ matches were completed before the rain returned. Lleyton Hewitt is
locked at 1 set all with Guillermo Canas, Nikolay Davydenko is up 2 sets and a break,
Novak Djokovic won his first set against Nicolas Keifer with the second on serve at 6-5. All
will have to come back tonight to finish their matches, as will 2nd seed Raphael Nadal. The
young Spaniard dropped the 3rd and 4th sets of his match against Swede Robin Soderling
and will return tonight to play a 5th set.
In a bid to make up some of the backlog of matches, play will commence (weather
permitting) on all courts at 11am London time (8pm Sydney time) tonight.
