| It was a busy round of basketball to see in the new year, but the best match of all was saved till last. Top 2 sides Sydney and Melbourne faced off at the King-Dome in a match worthy of a finals playoff. In a match of fluctuating fortunes, the Tigers' Chris Anstey was magnificent with 28 points, but the Luke Kendall-inspired Kings were equal to the task; and at the conclusion of regulation time the teams couldn't be separated. The exellent crowd of over 5,000 was in voice, and they were to go home enthralled and in high spirits after the Kings were able to pull away during the final moments of added time to record a 115-107 victory. Click here to see Harboursport's photo gallery of the Kings v Tigers match. The win extended the Kings' lead at the top of the table after challengers Melbourne and Brisbane both split their matches. The Tigers, before the overtime epic against the Kings, had recorded a 117-102 win over Gold Coast; while Brisbane had been defeated by Cairns Taipans but bounced back with a thumping 132-101 win over South Dragons. That result finished a nightmare Doomsday Double for the Dragons, who had been thrashed 123-88 by Townsville the night before and finished the round sitting on an 8-match losing streak. A double by Perth Wildcats saw the WA team move into the top 4. The first result was a blowout, with the Wildcats 124-87 too good for the hapless Singapore, but their home game against Adelaide 36ers was much closer, with the lead fluctuating during the evening before the Wildcats were able to hold the lead at the final buzzer. The win placed the Wildcats in the top 4 at the expense of Gold Coast, despite an 87-79 win over Townsville. The topsy-turvy season of New Zealand continued during their NSW road trip, going down 111-101 to Wollongong but bouncing back with a 113-97 win over the Razorbacks. That result kept the Breakers in 7th spot, and hopes of their first finals appearance continue to grow. |
