FORD RANGER CUP SCOREBOARD - ROUND 1
|
Tasmania got their domestic season off to a perfect start when they wrapped
up a double bonus point against Queensland at the Gabba.
Sent in, the Tasmanians played steadily; maintaining a 4 runs per over run
rate for the innings despite a mid-innings flurry of wickets before finishing
strongly to reach 7/226. Tim Payne top scored with 73 off 95 balls, while
debutant Mark Divin was impressive in the later overs to score 41 off 39.
In reply, Queensland started disastrously when Ryan Broad was dismissed for
a duck, and it never improved. With the rain clouds closing in, the Bulls
attempted to boost the run rate but lost wickets; pushing the par score
higher. When the rain came, Queensland had crashed to 6 for 63; and while
the rain saved the Bulls from being bowled out, it didn't prevent the Tigers
from recording a big Duckworth-Lewis victory.

WA got off to a good start against NSW, and for much of their innings
looked likely to make 300. Luke Ronchi was in superb form, but once he
was dismissed the Warriors were unable to maintain the run rate and finished
their innings with 268. That looked more than enough when Cowan and
Thornely were dismissed early; but a fine partnership between Phil Jaques
and Simon Katich threatened to turn the game in NSW's favour. But the
fortunes of the game would turn again after Katich's dismissal, and by the
time the score had slumped to 7 for 195 with more than 9 runs per over
required the Blues looked gone. But some late hitting by Matthew Nicholson
and Nathan Hauritz turned the game again, making a strong charge towards
the difficult target; and in the end the Warriors were only just able to hang
on and claim victory by the smallest possible margin.

Victoria set up a fascinating evening of cricket when, after winning the toss
and batting, the Bushrangers reached 263. Aiden Blizzard played a strong
role early, getting up to 72 before being adjudged lbw off the bowling of Dan
Cullen. After his dismissal, Cameron White boosted the run rate on his way
to 76; but a flurry of wickets late in the innings prevented the score from
climbing out of reach.
After losing Elliott and Harris early, South Australia looked in control as
Mark Cosgrove and Nathan Adcock put on 121 for the third wicket. But
Adcock's dismissal, followed by Borgas and Cosgrove in quick succession, put
the Victorians back on top. Manou and Ryan Harris held back the tide for a
while with their 34-run partnership; but the run rate required continued to
climb, with Shane Harwood returning to the attack at the death to complete
a 5 wicket haul.
