There’s always plenty to look forward to when the first pre-season games get under way. Footy-starved fans come
out in their numbers; on this occasion 26,921 ventured to the Docklands for a Friday night triple-header, with
Essendon, Western Bulldogs and Collingwood in action.
Essendon’s pre-season had threatened to derail in the leadup to the game, with the club admitting their
involvement in a scandal involving the taking of possibly banned supplements. Investigations are ongoing, and
could potentially drag out for months. But in the mean time, there was some football to play.
Shaun Higgins scored an early nine-pointer for the Bulldogs. But the Bombers gradually began to get on top
around the ground to take the lead; and a 50 metre penalty against Dylan Addison set Kyle Hardingham up for a
late nine-point goal to put the Bombers 13 points ahead at half time. And the second half was all Essendon, with
three goals to one added to extend the final margin in the first game to 26 points. A pre-season that had
threatened to go wrong for the Bombers had at least got off to a positive start on the field.
Western Bulldogs joined Collingwood for the second match of the evening. The first half was evenly contested,
with the Bulldogs holding a narrow lead for much of the half and leading by two points at the break. But within a
minute of the restart, Dane Swan found room to move and landed a super-goal on the run to give the Magpies the
lead. It was a blow from which the Bulldogs were unable to recover, and they would kick just one goal in the
second half; while the Magpies were sparked into action and would score a further three goals to run out 18-point
winners.
Traditional rivals Collingwood and Essendon would meet in the last match of the night; and it would be a thriller
that would be decided in the closing seconds.
In the first half, the Bombers did the majority of the attacking, but could only manage two goals for the half. And
against the run of play, Ben Sinclair landed a nine-pointer, ensuring that for all the Bombers’ hard work, they
would have only a one-point lead to show for it. But with free agency signing Brendan Goddard providing plenty of
drive for the Bombers, a further two goals would see the lead out to ten points with just a couple of minutes to
play. But the last two minutes saw Andrew Krakouer and Travis Cloke score for the Magpies, enabling them to
snatch a last-gasp win and bragging rights with two wins from the opening night of the pre-season.

The mercury was in the high 30s in Perth as the two WA teams and Geelong took to Subiaco for the
second triple-header of the NAB Cup. Despite the oppressive heat, a crowd of 21,955 was on hand.
Geelong and West Coast were first up, and an accurate opening half saw every scoring shot a goal. The
Eagles had three of them and the Cats two, the Eagles leading by six points at the break. And further
encouragement for the Eagles would come shortly after the resumption; as Mark LeCras, playing his first
game since a serious knee injury in last year’s NAB Cup ruled him out for the season, moved effortlessly
to get himself on the scoreboard.
The Cats lost Matthew Stokes to an ankle injury, and the Eagles further extended their advantage as a 50
metre penalty gifted Bradd Dalziel a super-goal. But the Cats kept coming, working hard to peg back the
deficit. Trailing by seven points with just seconds on the clock, Jimmy Bartel marked on the forward 50
metre line before firing a handball backwards to a running Joel Selwood, who got his boot to the ball
before crossing the circle and fired home the nine-pointer that would snatch the win for the Cats.
The Cats returned to the field for the second match, but the comeback of the first game would not be
repeated when the Cats took on Fremantle. The Dockers made the early running with four of the first five
goals, but this time round there would be no way back for Geelong.
The Dockers were leading by 10 points at the break, but got back within a kick a minute into the second
half. But despite the absence of several key players, the Dockers had the run to see off any Geelong threat,
and would run away with the contest in the latter stages of the match. Two matches back to back in the
sapping heat had taken its toll on Geelong, and they had nothing more to give; while the Dockers were
well served by the run of Michael Barlow through the second half. But a sour note for the Dockers late in
the game was injuries to Chris Mayne and Aaron Sandilands.
The lights had taken over and the temperature slightly cooled down by the time the final match of the
evening got under way, a mini derby between the Eagles and Dockers. And it would be the Eagles to claim
the first bragging rights of the season with a comfortable 24-point win.
Having had the advantage of a rest between their two games, the Eagles looked much fresher and fitter as
they raced out of the blocks in the first half. An early super-goal to Shannon Hurn set them on their way,
and although their accuracy in front of goals would at times let them down, there was no questioning the
Eagle dominance through the first half; as the Dockers would not score until the dying seconds of the half.
The Eagles were 21 points ahead at half time, and the game looked to be safely won. The second half
never reached any great heights, but with two goals to one the Eagles completed an impressive display
through the last game of the night.
Honours were shared, each team in the triple-header coming away with a win and a loss; the Eagles
taking the best result out of the night with their superior percentage.

Sunday afternoon saw attention shift to Adelaide, where the Crows joined Port Adelaide and St Kilda for
the third triple-header of the weekend in fine and sunny conditions at AAMI Stadium.
The Crows elected to rest many of their top players from the first match, sending a largely second-string
team onto the field to take on St Kilda. And they would be unable to match it with a red-hot St Kilda side
who burst out of the blocks to set up a match-winning lead before half time. Beau Maister, in his first
appearance since changing his name from Beau Wilkes over the off-season, wasted no time in making a
name for himself as he kicked the first goal of the afternoon; with Terry Milera getting on the board
moments later. It was the start of a run of four unanswered goals for the Saints in the first half that would
open up a 21-point lead at the break.
The Crows had been unable to manage a goal in the first half. But they would find a goalscoring target in
the second half as Graeme Johncock presented himself to score three goals and be the leading goal-
scorer for the game. But it wouldn’t be anywhere near enough; as spearheaded by doubles to Maister and
Trent Dennis-Lane, the Saints would score four goals to three in the second half to record a 26-point win.
But as impressive as the Saints were in the first game, they failed to come anywhere near those heights in
the second. Instead it was Port Adelaide who emerged full of running as they powered their way to a
convincing 50-point demolition of the Saints.
A run of five goals to one for the first half laid the platform for the Power’s success. New coach Ken Hinkley
introduced many of his youngsters and draft picks; and his faith in the youth of the club was rewarded as
they proved themselves worthy of this level of footy. Leading by 24 points at half time, the Power further
enhanced their lead early in the second half with a booming super-goal to Matthew Broadbent. The Power
were on a roll, and four more goals to one rounded off the biggest winning margin in the NAB Cup to date.
Honours for the night were shared equally, as the Crows recorded a 16-point win over Port Adelaide in the
final game. As if the effort in the previous match had been too hard to maintain, the Power looked flat
during the first half of their mini-showdown, and the Crows took advantage to score three goals to one and
lock in a 13-point half time lead. But the Adelaide joy was tempered as Brodie Smith suffered a collarbone
injury when laying a tackle, and was forced from the field to play no further part in the match.
The Crows were ahead at half time and maintained that margin through an even second half; in which
three goals apiece were scored. The 16-point win wasn’t enough to erase the percentage deficit the
Crows suffered from their loss to St Kilda, but it was enough to ensure that each of the sides would
emerge with a win and a loss from the evening’s activies.
